The Vehicle with Gen Z in Mind

Generation Z is defined as people born from the mid 90’s to the mid 2000’s.  Soon the bulk of this demographic will be making their first big purchases like vehicles.  Toyota initiated a project with students from Clemson University.  The collaboration produced the uBox.

They believe that persons of that generation would be a young entrepreneur who wants a vehicle that can provide utility and recreation on the weekend but can also offer office space or other career centric uses during the week.  The end product is a boxy, fie passenger vehicle that can be customized several different ways.  Seats are easy to remove for more space.  It has an all-electric powertrain that doubles as a power source for mobile devices and tools.

Toyota also says the team developed an industry first manufacturing technique that bonds composite carbon fiber with aluminum.  That structure is also used to support the large glass roof.  The uBox concept was developed and hand built by grad students at Clemson’s International Center for Automotive Research in collaboration with Toyota.  The project, was referred to as Deep Orange and spanned a two-year period.  It was unveiled at the Society of Automotive Engineers World Congress and Exposition in Detroit.

The uBox concept is targeted at buyers in the year 2020.  Toyota also unveiled a more finished looking concept called the u2 which is pronounced u squared, also aimed at the same target audience.
